Lower
than Normal Water Levels in Riffe Lake
As of mid-May
2008, we wait for the snow in the mountains to melt and fill Riffe Lake. The
lake is lower than normal for this time of the year because this spring’s cooler
temperatures have prevented the plentiful mountain snow from melting. This
winter, the lake was lowered further than usual to allow for the completion of
the Taidnapam North Boat Launch (see below). The snow is melting very gradually,
and because we are required to provide downstream flows for fish in the Cowlitz
River, the lake is refilling slowly.
The Taidnapam
North boat launch will open when the lake reaches 720 feet of elevation, and
Mossyrock Park boat launch will open at about 725 feet. The Kosmos boat launch
will open at about 746 feet and the Taidnapam Park boat launch will open at
about 760 feet. Boaters can call Tacoma Power’s toll-free Fishing and Recreation
Line at 1-888-502-8690 to learn the current water levels and which boat launches
are open.
The Taidnapam
North Boat Launch
The good news
about the lower lake level this past winter was that it allowed Tacoma Power to
complete the lengthening of the ramp almost 30 feet lower into the
reservoir. The boat ramp will now be usable at all water levels above 720 feet
of elevation. In addition, we added an additional launching lane that will be
useable during normal summer high water. Still to come is a launching dock
between the two ramps to aid boaters as they launch their boats.
Taidnapam
North’s parking lot was also chip-sealed to provide a smoother surface. There
are vault toilets, an informational kiosk and signage. Camping and fires are not
allowed in the parking lot. At this time, there is no fee to park in the
lot. Boaters may call Tacoma Power’s toll-free Fishing and Recreation Line at
1-888-502-8690 to determine when the boat launch opens.
Taidnapam Park
expansion
Work continues
on the addition of 87 individual campsites to Taidnapam Park. Sewer and water
lines are now being placed, and we expect construction to be completed in early
fall. The expansion includes full utility hookup sites, walk-in tent sites,
restrooms with shower facilities and a play area. Twelve new group campsites are
already completed.
ADA Fishing
Site at Barrier Dam on the Cowlitz River
Construction
is complete on the ADA accessible-wheelchair ramp on the Cowlitz River near
Barrier Dam. Anglers in wheelchairs can access the river’s edge at various water
levels.
ADA Fishing
Site at Blue Creek on the Cowlitz River
A
wheelchair-accessible platform was constructed at the edge of the river near the
Blue Creek boat launch. Wheelchair-bound anglers are allowed to fish from this
platform in an area otherwise closed to fishing. We are investigating future
improvements to make this site even more useable.
