Cowlitz River Project
The
Cowlitz River Project
is located in an area rich in wildlife and recreational opportunity.
This area is an outdoor enthusiast's dream. Balancing use, enjoyment and preservation of
the environment is no easy task and one that Tacoma Power takes seriously.

Tacoma Power has dedicated more than 14,000 acres of land as the
Cowlitz Wildlife Area.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife manages the area, which Tacoma Power owns.
It consists of several different zones, each managed somewhat differently because of
varying environmental factors.
Tacoma Power also funds the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's operation of
Tacoma Power's Cowlitz River hatcheries. The
Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery was the world's
largest when it was built in 1968. A few miles down river from the salmon hatchery is the
Cowlitz Trout Hatchery.
In addition to supporting anadromous salmon and steelhead fisheries, Tacoma Power funds
state-managed programs for fisheries in
Mayfield Lake, Riffe Lake and Swofford Pond.
