Fisheries & Wildlife Programs
In addition to providing a renewable source of electricity,
Tacoma Power’s four hydroelectric projects support major wildlife
and fisheries programs.
Thousands of acres of wildlife land are carefully managed to
provide quality wildlife habitat. Some of these wildlife areas are
managed by Tacoma Power’s natural resources management team, while
others are managed by the Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife.
The Cowlitz Wildlife Area
encompasses 14,000 acres dedicated to wildlife habitat. Tacoma
Power manages 3,500 acres of wildlife land in the
Nisqually
River Project area. Designated zones are managed differently
on the basis of their unique habitats and features.
The
Cowlitz River fishery program funded by Tacoma Power is among
the largest in
Washington
State. Today's program evolved from continuous effort to support
an excellent fishery resource in the Cowlitz River Basin.
Tacoma Power conducts
fisheries
projects on the Nisqually River. Tacoma Power enhances salmon
habitat downstream of the dams and resident fish habitat upstream
of the dams.
