Tacoma Public Utilities is aware that some of our customers live on limited incomes, and may have difficulty paying their utility bills. We have a number of services to help those who may be in this situation.

 

Discount Rates

  • 25 percent discount from Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, Sewer Utility, and Solid Waste Utility, Surface Water Management and Wastewater Management
  • Discount on Click! Network cable television services. Call 253-502-8900.

To qualify (must meet all of the following criteria):

  1. Be a Tacoma Public Utilities customer and have the account in your name
  2. Be the head of household
  3. Monthly gross household income from all sources must not be more than:

  1. Must be 62 years or older or disabled, receiving disability income

Those who receive Labor and Industries or General Assistance Unemployable benefits must reapply every six months.

South Sound Outreach Services will screen applicants to determine eligibility.

Emergency Payment Assistance for Water Service

  • For residential customers in single-family household who have delinquent bills and are at risk of having their water service shut off.
  • May cover City of Tacoma solid waste, surface water and wastewater bills

To qualify, you must meet all these criteria:

  1. The residential Tacoma Public Utilities bill must be in the applicant's name
  2. Household must meet income guidelines. Monthly gross household income from all sources must not be more than:

Assistance for Heating Bills

  • For customers who need help paying their winter electric heating bills
  • These funds are distributed annually, starting in the fall
  • A disconnection notice is not needed to apply for these funds
  • Customers may use these funds once per year

If you qualify, you will receive assistance from Tacoma Power's Family Need program and the federal program, LIHEAP. Payments will be applied directly to your Tacoma Power electric bill. You only need to apply once for both programs.

To qualify for heating bill assistance, you must meet all the following criteria:

  1. You must be a Tacoma Power customer and have the account in your name.
  2. You must meet income guidelines. Your monthly gross household income from all sources must not be more than:

Donation to Tacoma Power Low-Income Assistance Program is tax-deductible. You can do it online here.

Hard times can happen to anyone. In Pierce County there are over 30,000 families who need help. Eighty-five percent of these families have annual incomes under $20,000 and more than half have children. These are families who have lost their jobs, suffered a long-term illness or faced a family emergency.

Tacoma Power has been providing assistance to low-income customers for over 20 years. Your donations will help make customers' homes more energy efficient, provided needed repairs and educate customers about energy conservation.

You or your business can help by making a tax-deductible contribution.  

Donating is simple!

  • Add a contribution when you pay your Tacoma Public Utility's bill.  Better yet, use the pledge form located on your bill to make regular contributions.

  • Use your VISA or MasterCard. Call us for details.

  • Send a check or money order payable to Tacoma Power Low-Income Assistance Program, P.O. Box 11007, Tacoma, WA   98411.
