Holiday Safety Tips

Tacoma Power wishes you a happy and safe holiday season. As you select and display your decorations, we encourage you to make safe and energy-efficient decisions so that your holidays will bring good memories.

• Keep tree and greenery away from all heat sources.
• Be sure all ornaments, trimmings and artificial trees are made of fire-retardant or noncombustible materials.
• Use only UL Approved lights. Approved products are tested for resistance to water, sunlight and heat and require certain standards of wiring. Outdoor lights should be rated for outside use. Look for the UL approved sticker on the package.
• Light outdoor decorations during evening hours only, from dusk until bedtime for homes and from dusk until the close of business hours for commercial displays.
• Unplug your tree lights and all lighted decorations when you are away from home or asleep.
• Instead of elaborate lighting displays at your home, enjoy community displays at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium’s Zoolights, Spanaway Park’s Fantasy Lights and other community events.
• Be aware of how much electricity your lighting display uses. Whenever possible, use low-wattage LED lighting.

Why LED lights?

• Up to 25 strings can be connected end-to-end
• Cool to the touch
