IMPORTANT NOTICE
To Contractors, Electricians,
Engineers and Business Partners
There will be no electrical inspections on
April 22 and 23 as all Tacoma Power inspectors will be in training
those days. The permit counter will remain opened.
How much excess conductor?
Please notify your staff about this update.
Customer Requirement standards C-SV-1200, “Residential
Underground Service Boxes”, and C-SV-3200, “Commercial
Secondary Service”, have been updated to clarify Tacoma
Power's requirements for the amount of excess conductor the
customer is to leave in the SSB.
This is four feet for SSB’s without bottoms and ten feet for SSB’s
with bottoms, both measured from the top of the box.
T&D crews need this extra cable to train and coil them so that
when they have to access them later, they can pull the connectors
outside of the box to work on them.

To ensure the safety of
Tacoma Power employees and the public, and in the interest of
increasing security and reducing vandalism at Tacoma Power
facilities, it has become necessary that Tacoma Power can only
accept electrical meters inside cabinets at unsupervised locations
such as intersections, street corners, street margins, and county or
city roads. These cabinets must be EUSERC approved per Customer
Service Policy 2.4 A 2. This policy change is effective immediately.
It may affect installations such as street lighting, signal
lighting, pump services, communication services, and data services.
Please be informed that effective July 1,
2006, the City of Tacoma Building and Land Use Services’ combination
permit for new single-family dwelling will no longer include
electrical permits.
Due to code changes, all electrical permits must be purchased
directly from Tacoma Power’s Electrical Inspection Office. We are
located on the 3rd floor of the Tacoma Public Utilities
Administration Building at 3628 South 35th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409.
Other changes include:
• In accordance with Tacoma Municipal Code 2.04.250, all fees
associated with the electrical permit application must be paid at
the time of issue.
• An owner residing at the property doing electrical work must
submit an owner of occupancy affidavit, to complete the application
process as required by Tacoma Code 2.04.230 A2.
• All electrical work on the property for sale or lease must be
completed by the electrical contractor, as required by RCW
19.28.101.
If you have questions, please call 253-502-8435.
Starting July 10, 2006, Tacoma Power will
strictly enforce the
City of Tacoma Electrical Code
2.04.250 requiring all fees including connection fees be paid at
the time of application and before any inspection is made.
Starting July 10, 2006, we will no longer offer next business day
inspections for permit applications received after 1:00 p.m. This
does not apply to inspections that are being scheduled over the
automated voice recognition system using the permit number.
We will continue to make every reasonable effort to schedule and
complete inspection requests made prior to 1:00 p.m. for the next
business day. However, depending on the workload, inspections may
not take place until the second business day. Most inspections will
be performed within 48 hours of the request as stated in our
Electrical Inspection Handbook.
The State of Washington Electrical WAC Rules
that adopts the 2005 National Electrical Code goes in effect June 30,
2005. The
City of Tacoma Electrical Code will be effective July 1,
2005. The printed copy
is available at the
Electrical Inspection's office counter on
the 3rd floor of the Tacoma Public Utilities Administration Building. The new city code has permit fee increases,
so please review these for any permits that are to be purchased
after June 30, 2005.
